I don’t know who owned the bike from new. The history as I know it begins with a man called Dave Wood who lived at the Bull and Spectacles pub in Blithbury, Staffordshire. Dave bought the bike off a man from Hednesford in 1984. Dave then sold the bike to my best mate Tim Miles-Shenton who lived in Hill Ridware in 1985. Tim moved to Gloucester with his family and took the bike with him. In 1988, whilst working away from home, Tim, aged just 21 was tragically killed. The bike remained at his parents’ house following his death, but was stolen by some local youngsters who rode it across fields before painting it black in an attempt to disguise it. Thankfully the bike was recovered 2 days after it was stolen and was passed on to Tim’s brother in law, Nick. The bike was never used by Nick and was eventually sold to Dave, a building inspector from Cannock who was working with Tim’s dad at the time. Many years later following a discussion with Tim’s dad I decided to contact Dave to see if he still had the bike. I learned that the bike had stood idle in Dave’s garage for 13 years. I made him an offer and became its new owner. The bike had been neglected to say the least so I wanted to get it fully restored in honour of Tim and his family. I enlisted the help of Dave Newitt, a well known classic bike restorer from Hinckley, Leicestershire. I didn’t have much spare money at the time so Dave (a complete gentleman) carried out the work in stages to suit my budget. Dave contacted me in early 2014 to inform me that the bike was almost finished, but he wouldn’t be able to complete the full restoration due to being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Dave passed away in April 2014. The bike returned home and sat in my garage for almost 2 years whilst I tried to find someone who could assist with the final stages of the restoration. Having spoken to various enthusiasts I was eventually introduced to Richard and Anthony from A & G Autos, Rugeley who I’m pleased to say did an excellent job in completing the restoration on the bike. Having done what I set out do in getting the XT fully restored I feel my journey with the bike is complete. It’s now time for someone else who can ride it, love it (and maybe show it) to take over as owner.
